P&G Pakistan volunteers inaugurate new academic block of P&G-READ school at Lamnian

ISLAMABAD, June 14, 2010: More than 25 employees from Procter & Gamble (P&G) Pakistan travelled to Lamnian, Muzaffarabad to engage with students of the P&G-READ Foundation School there and to mark the inauguration of the new academic block. Employee volunteers from P&G Pakistan thoroughly enjoyed the experience, engaging with the students of the P&G-READ Foundation School and saying it was perhaps the best way to spend a weekend.

Over the course of this 2-day trip, P&G Pakistan employee volunteers, travelling from Karachi, painted the schools, planted trees and invested their personal time in decorating the classrooms with fun, educational materials at the Bhara Kahu and Lamnian, P&G-READ Foundation schools. The students were touched by this personal gesture of the P&G employee volunteers who engaged with them in painting sessions as well.

Through the ‘Safe Schooling for Building Futures’ program in partnership with READ foundation, a leading educational non-governmental organization P&G has established two formal seismic-compliant schools in the earthquake-affected areas of Gojra and Lamnian in Muzaffarabad and one formal school in Bhara Kahu, a suburb of Islamabad. These schools were constructed in the aftermath of the October 2005 earthquake when countless lives were lost due to the natural calamity. P&G employees have enthusiastically contributed precious time towards this cause over the years and still continue to do so relentlessly.

The P&G-READ Foundation School, established at Gojra, near Muzaffarabad is one of the largest schools in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, providing quality education, free of cost, to around 1,800 students. Overall around 3,000 underprivileged children have received quality education through this program to date.

P&G volunteers thoroughly enjoyed this two-day trip where they got the opportunity to interact closely with the underprivileged children of the P&G-READ Foundation Schools. Omeir Dawoodji, Brand PR Leader, recognized the efforts of the volunteers as a reflection of P&G’s purpose to touch and improve the lives of the community wherever it operates. He further said: “This project is part of our many local efforts under our global corporate cause of enabling children in need to Live, Learn and Thrive. The inauguration of the newly established academic block at the P&G-READ Foundation School at Lamnian, brings to life P&G’s commitment to invest in the Pakistani communities and is a symbol of our dedication to the cause of enabling children to learn by providing them access to places and tools for learning, through a safe and functional schooling experience.”

On the whole, the trip was well-organized with many joyful faces that comprised P&G-READ school students who were ecstatic about their freshly-painted, new academic block at the P&G-READ School at Lamnian.
