P&G University Challenge

Karachi/Lahore, February 11th 2010: The P&G University Challenge culminated in Lahore amidst participation from universities across the country. The inaugural launch of the competition saw more than 1000 students from 25 universities across Pakistan competing in the challenge.

The innovation, inspiration and emotional investments that formed the basis of the University Challenge project was significant in P&G’s outreach commitment to university students. The competition entailed three segments: Business Launch Competition; Battle of the Bands and University Champions League.

The Business Launch Competition provided students with the opportunity to create and present business plans on the introduction of global P&G brands into the Pakistani market. Each team, comprising of 6-7 students was provided a 30 min run to present a comprehensive business plan for an exciting new P&G product (allocated to the team beforehand). The winning team was an ecstatic lot from NUST whose plan for Crest was undisputedly a cut above the rest.

The judges were forthcoming with suggestions and feedback, some useful tips to take home for the next year. Umer al Ghamdi, Talent Practice Leader Arabian Peninsula & PK, said that students need to focus just as much on presentation skills as on the content of presentation itself and to assimilate the question carefully before replying. Saad Khan, CEO Gillette, said that a thorough understanding of numbers was essential to back any business plan and to make it wholesome.

The University Champions League saw students from participating institutions compete in a football tournament and was held at Lahore School of Economics. The final, though interrupted by sporadic rain was a thunderous performance between GIK and LUMS where the former took the trophy home.

The Karachi segment of the same competition was held towards the end of January bringing together engineers and business-students; the IoBM (CBM) snagged the Business Launch Competition. Karachi also hosted the Battle of the Bands, which showcased emerging musical talent of the country where students were required to perform an original song to a panel of judges led by Farooq Ahmed, lead singer of Aaroh band. The BoB was won by the band Spoonful, an upcoming musical group from SZABIST Karachi.

The P&G University Challenge drew serious talent and the competitions were intense promoting a spirit of competition in the youth. The competition not only brought a diverse of group of students together but also proved to be an integral networking opportunity for students of IBA, LUMS, GIKI, SZABIST, Lahore School of Economics, Fast University, NED, Iqra University, IoBM, UET Lahore, Kinnaird College, GCU Lahore, BNU Lahore etc.
