P&G Pakistan and HOPE celebrate 6-years of ‘Keeping the Hope Alive’

KARACHI, May 24, 2010: Procter & Gamble Pakistan organized a carnival for 200 students of the P&G-HOPE schools network. The event was a celebration of the six-year long, fruitful partnership between P&G Pakistan and Health Oriented Preventive Education (HOPE) for its ‘Keeping the Hope Alive’ initiative.

Through the ‘Keeping the Hope Alive’ initiative more than 2000 underprivileged children have received quality education in Pakistan over the past six years. The event provided children of the P&G-HOPE informal schools the opportunity to enjoy thrilling rides at a private park amongst many other fun-filled activities such as face-painting and a unique story-telling session. Moreover, P&G Pakistan employees actively participated in the celebration through engaging with the children in the various activities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Qaisar Shareef, Country Manager P&G Pakistan, said, “According to the Ministry of Education, the overall literacy rate in Pakistan stands at 49 percent and only 36.8% of the girls are literate. Moreover, according to UNICEF just over half of the 19 million children of primary school age are actually enrolled in primary education in Pakistan. We believe that the private sector can play an important role in catering to this primary need by creating educational avenues for children through partnerships with expert development organizations.”

“P&G Pakistan is committed to focus on the development of children in need through the P&G global corporate cause called Live, Learn and Thrive. In partnership with HOPE, we have set up 60 informal schools across low-income neighborhoods in Karachi and Thatta. Moreover, our employees have played an essential part in all our community activities. Over the years, P&G Pakistan employees have been keenly engaged in this project by leading the children of the P&G-HOPE schools on various fun educational trips to museums, cultural heritage, nature and wildlife conservation sites, added Qaisar.”

Sharing her thoughts on the occasion, Dr. Mubina Agboatwala, Chairperson HOPE, said, “Without education there will be no awareness and enlightenment. The ‘Keeping the Hope Alive’ initiative strives to enable children in need to learn by providing access to places and tools for learning, through a safe and functional schooling experience. The P&G-HOPE schools are set up in the homes of trained teachers living in the underprivileged slum communities of Karachi and Thatta. Teacher training is a very essential element of this initiative which focuses on empowering teachers with improved teaching aids and methodologies. It is heartening for us to see the joyful spirit of these children today which is in essence a reflection of our collective dream realized.”

On the whole, the event was well-organized with many joyful faces that comprised P&G-HOPE school children, HOPE management and P&G employees united under a common mission to touch and improve more lives more holistically.

The ‘Keeping the Hope Alive’ initiative stems from P&G’s global cause entitled Live, Learn and Thrive (LLT) which focuses on the Company’s commitment to help children in need.
