U.S. Chamber Names P&G Pakistan as Finalist for Corporate Citizenship Award


Karachi, September 11, 2008:The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center today named Procter & Gamble Pakistan as a finalist for a Corporate Citizenship Award in the category of International Community Service.
“The International Community Service Award is all about recognizing how global companies can make a positive difference wherever they do business,” said BCLC Executive Director Stephen Jordan. “P&G and the other finalists demonstrate with their actions the value of corporate citizenship around the world.”

Sharing his comments on this nomination, Qaisar Shareef, Country Manager P&G Pakistan said, “It is an honor for P&G Pakistan to be nominated for this prestigious award and we appreciate the recognition given by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. As a company, we, at P&G strive to make a positive contribution to communities where we operate as improving life lies at the core of our corporate values. We are honored to be able to contribute to Pakistan’s social sector and are committed to continue with community programs that have long lasting benefits.”

P&G Pakistan partners with HOPE (Health Oriented Preventive Education) and has built a network of 60 informal schools across rural Karachi and Thatta that have been established in the homes of local teachers. Books and stationary are given free of cost to students, and teachers are trained through a detailed Teachers Resource Center.

The International Community Service Award, now in its 9th year, acknowledges businesses and American chambers of commerce for corporate citizenship programs that contribute to social and civic progress in communities outside of the U.S. The American Chamber of Commerce of Nicaragua, Coca-Cola China Ltd., FedEx and Pfizer Inc. are also finalists in this category. The winner of the International Community Service Award will be selected by a panel of corporate citizenship leaders, including past winners and BCLC’s board of directors. The winner will be announced on November 18 at a celebration dinner at Washington, DC’s National Building Museum. Six hundred business, civic, and government leaders are expected to attend the event.
