P&G Delivers 5 Billionth Liter of Water

Karachi, Sept 28th, 2012: Procter & Gamble (P&G) announced a milestone in its effort to save one life every hour through sharing clean drinking water. Nearly a decade ago P&G began providing clean drinking water in developing countries through its P&G Purifier of Water technology, and has just shared its 5 billionth liter - saving an estimated 26,000 lives and preventing over 200 million days of illness. The 5 billionth liter was delivered in Malawi, through a partnership with the University of North Carolina

Global statistics are truly disturbing. Safe drinking water is a problem for over 1 billion people in the world. Contaminated drinking water is a major problem in several parts of the developing world causing diarrheal illness especially amongst children. As a result, thousands of children die every day.

In Pakistan alone, forty percent of the country's population is deprived of this basic resource, giving way to numerous ailments. The P&G Children's Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program is the company's focal philanthropic effort under its Live, Learn, and Thrive corporate cause. Since its launch in Pakistan in 2004, the P&G CSDW program has delivered over 718 million liters of clean drinking water in the country, touching the lives of an estimated 5 million children. The CSDW program is a not-for-profit initiative specific to the developing world where P&G works with a diverse network of organizations and has just delivered its five-billionth liter in Malawi.

The CSDW Program has reached millions of women and children - women like Lusiya Daniel. Each day, Lusiya collects water from a highly contaminated local well for herself and her nine children. Through the program, she receives P&G Packets at each clinic visit. "I'm so happy that I've been lucky to receive the 5 billionth clean liter," Lusiya said, "and had there been a radio I would have danced to express the happiness that I have." The milestone marks progress toward P&G's commitment to scale up efforts to share clean water and save one life every hour by 2020 by providing 2 billion liters of clean water every year.
