2 Billion Liters of Safe Drinking Water for the World's neediest children

Every day more than 4,000 children in developing countries die, simply because they don't have clean drinking water. In many parts of the world, people have no running water and are forced to drink directly from contaminated rivers, wells and streams filled with bacteria, parasites and viruses that can make children extremely sick with diarrhea. In the developing world, contaminated drinking water is a leading cause of death among infants. It is estimated that about 1.8 million children die every year due to diarrheal diseases. More children die from diarrheal illnesses like cholera and dysentery than from HIV/AIDS or malaria combined.

Since 1995, P&G has worked to develop a solution for this problem. After many years of extensive research, P&G's efforts yielded amazing results with the creation of PuR: P&G's revolutionary water purification packets. The PuR packet is an amazing innovation: a powdered mixture that quickly turns 10 liters of dirty, potentially deadly water into clean and drinkable water. PuR is today proved to remove more than 99.9% of intestinal bacteria (including those that cause cholera), 99.9% of intestinal viruses (including those that cause hepatitis A) and reduce diarrheal disease incidence in the developing world by up to 90%.

P&G extended its efforts globally in 2004 with the launch of the Children Safe Drinking Water program aimed at providing clean drinking water in the developing world, using the PUR water purification packets.

Last week, and after 6 years from the launch of the program, P&G announced it has provided its two billionth liter of clean drinking water to the World's children, in the town of Dichato to Chilean earthquake survivors. The first billionth liter of clean water was provided in April 2008 in Lagos, Nigeria following more than five years of effort by the Children Safe Drinking Water program.

"This is a fulfillment of P&G's purpose as a company, which is to touch and improve lives for now and generations to come," said Greg AllGood, the director of P&G's Children Safe Drinking Water program. "We are helping to save lives. The P&G Children's Safe Drinking Water Program has provided two billion liters of clean drinking water around the world. P&G is committed to provide billions more liters of clean drinking water and help address the crisis of children dying needlessly. And now we have an even more ambitious goal: to share more than four billion liters by the year 2012"
