Last September, Bob McDonald, P&G's Chief Operating Officer and a team of P&G senior management visited the Near-East MDO.
McDonald, Werner Geissler (Vice Chairman, Global Operations), Laurent Philippe (CEEMEA Group President), Philip Wellens (CEEMEA Finance VP), and Bob Fregolle (CEEMEA CBD VP) spent two days in Egypt in order to gain deeper understanding of the P&G organization and the current and future business in the region. The visit also provided opportunities to experience the Country’s government, economy and business environment.
On the first day, P&G senior management visited Sharqeya – a rural governorate on the outskirts of Cairo. Objective of the visit was to get an in-depth view of P&G CDI growth efforts amongst low income consumers. They visited Egypt’s distribution expansion Sub-Distributor model and its covered stores. The team also attended an Ariel HS road-show and a Pampers Mobile Clinic visit with consumers. Finally, the team visited consumers in their homes, to better understand their habits and traditions.
After the Near-East business review, P&G management met with Egyptian key government officials and business sector dignitaries over dinner. In his word to the guests, Bob McDonald provided a perspective on P&G’s global growth, highlighting the company’s focus on developing markets. He confirmed P&G’s commitment to Egypt and the Near-East, a region which the company considers to be among its engines of growth.
The second day witnessed the highlight of the visit when Bob McDonald and the P&G leadership accompanied by H. E. Rachid Mohamed Rachid, Egyptian Minister of Trade & Industry and H. E. Amb. Francis Riccardione, Ambassador of the USA to Egypt, inaugurated P&G’s manufacturing facility’s new expansions, worth some USD $50 Million. The new expansions represent the first stage of a 3 years expansion plan in Egypt, totaling some USD $130 Million.
In his speech during the celebration, Minister Rachid commended P&G on its sustainable growth and successes over the past 21 years in Egypt. “I'm very pleased to see this very aggressive expansion plan. I'm sure that this will have a very positive impact on the Egyptian economy. I'm sure it will have a positive impact on the Egyptian young people who would be recruited and trained and given the chance to be challenged and challenge the opportunity that you are supporting”, said the Minister.
P&G senior management visit, which coincided with the holy month of Ramadan – where Egyptians fast from sunrise to sunset – was concluded by an iftar (breakfast) banquet with the Near-East’s Leadership Team at Beit Al-Seheimy, a historical mansion of Islamic Cairo.
Mohamed Samir, P&G Near-East General Manager confirmed that Bob's visit to Egypt, the second to the Near-East within the same calendar year – following earlier visit to Beirut – was a new testimonial of the strength of the Near-East’s business and organization, and another opportunity to demonstrate the prospects of its healthy and growing business.
