The Humane Society of the United States and Procter & Gamble present the 2007 North American Animal Welfare and Alternatives Awards.
Awards of U.S. $25,000 will be presented in each of the following categories:
- Alternatives: In recognition of contributions to the research and development of alternative methods or research in toxicology resulting in reduced animal use;
- Welfare: In recognition of contributions to laboratory science or education related to improvements in animal welfare;
- Local Community Initiative: To assist local animal shelter or rescue groups.
The aim of the awards is to provide support and encouragement to key scientists active in these areas, emphasize the role of good science in finding solutions and fund animal welfare activities at the local community level that might not otherwise be funded.
Eligibility & Geography:
All applicants must be located in the United States, Canada or Mexico. The Alternatives and Welfare Awards will be open to individual scientists. Organizations that have annual budgets under U.S. $750,000 will be considered for the Local Community Initiative Award.
Application:
Alternatives: Applications will be limited to a two-page summary detailing the contribution of the candidate to the research and development of alternative methods or research in toxicology and mechanistic risk assessment resulting in reduced animal use (based on the principles of refinement, reduction and replacement). Reference should be made to key publications detailing the contributions as well as any evidence of regulatory or other (quasi-) official endorsement. The application should be endorsed by a peer (at a separate institution) with appropriate knowledge of the candidate.
The U.S. $25,000 award is intended for professional use and the applicant should therefore include a one-page proposal detailing the intended research (or other related) activities to which these funds will be applied. A resume of the applicant should also be included (maximum three pages). All documents are to be provided in PDF format.
Welfare: Applications will be limited to a two-page summary detailing the contribution of the individual to laboratory science or education related to improvements in animal welfare. Reference should be made to key publications detailing the contributions as well as any evidence of regulatory or other (quasi-) official endorsement. The application should be endorsed by a peer (at a separate institution) with appropriate knowledge of the candidate.

Local Community Initiative: Several awards amounting to U.S. $25,000 will be made available. The intention is to seek out the most innovative programs among animal sheltering and animal rescue groups. The program must have been launched at some time during the previous 3 years. Applications will be limited to a two-page proposal describing how the award will be applied. Also required is a two-page description of relevant historical activities of the organization applying for the award, to include information that would allow the panel to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. A resume of the lead applicant should also be included (maximum two pages). All documents are to be provided in PDF format.
Deadline & Submission:
Applications for awards are due by January 31, 2007. They should be sent to animalresearch.im@pg.com with the relevant subject heading ("Alternatives Award," "Welfare Award" or "Local Community Award") dependent upon the award being applied for. Any enquiries may also be submitted to the same email address with the heading "Award Query."
