Animal Care & Treatment
P&G does not use animal testing when safety information or non-animal research alternatives are available. We conduct only the minimal amount of animal testing on our non-drug and non-food products that is necessary to prove our products are safe, or to comply with government regulations.
Before any study using animals begins, a special committee of veterinarians, scientists, and community representatives must approve the test plans. Each animal is given the best possible veterinary care and treated with care and respect.
Specially trained veterinarians supervise all P&G animal research. Government officials inspect our research centers regularly. Our facilities meet the highest professional standards set by the Association of Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International. All animals are bred for research purposes, except for some studies on pet health and nutrition that involve pet animals with the owner's consent.
Eighty-five percent of the animals used for human safety testing are rats and mice. The remainder are mostly guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, and ferrets. We do not use cats or dogs in research or testing for non-food or non-drug products.
