Research and Technical Careers in Industry Conference

A Unique Opportunity
"Overall, it was the most informative conference I've ever experienced. Not only did it paint a perfect picture of industry and my role in it, but it gave me the opportunity to meet other budding scientists like myself."

You are invited to apply to participate in a three-day conference on Research and Technical Careers in Industry. Through participation in this technology conference developed for Ph.D. scientists/engineers, you will have the unique opportunity to see the technical challenges and career options that exist in industry today.

This conference has been designed to give Ph.D. scientists a broad overview of research in industry and to provide opportunities to:

  • Network with a group of successful minority scientist/engineers and other professionals whose leadership in science and technology is well established;
  • Interact with P&G managers at all levels to gain a broader perspective on the management of technology and the innovation process;
  • Engage in technical discussions with industrial scientists and engineers in your discipline;
  • Learn what companies are looking for in new employees and how to interview for industry;
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the realities of cultural and workforce diversities;
  • Talk with past conference participants who are now employees of the company.

What You Need to Know
The conference is held annually in June in Cincinnati, Ohio. Applications are accepted year- round, but must be received by mid-February, to be considered for that year's summer session.

It is primarily intended for African -American, Hispanic, or Native American doctoral and postdoctoral scientists who want to learn more about industrial research careers, but other qualified candidates will be considered.* The minority-focused conference is part of our strong and successful diversity program as evidenced by P&G receiving the U.S. Department of Labor's prestigious Opportunity 2000 Award, which recognizes equal-employment hiring, retention, and advancement. In a continuing and committed effort to maintain a diverse work force, Procter & Gamble's minority scientists/engineers and the PhD. recruiting office have developed this unique conference.

Preferred disciplines are chemistry, life sciences, toxicology, chemical and material science/polymer engineeringand chemical engineering. Applicants must have a doctoral degree or expect to receive one within 9 - 12 months of the conference date. For maximum individual benefit, a limited number of applicants will be chosen to participate.

All travel expenses and hotel accommodation costs are paid by P&G. Visits to Cincinnati-based technical centers are included.

Participants in the conference may be considered for future employment at P&G. However, participation neither obligates you to apply for employment nor guarantees future consideration for employment by the Company.

To apply, go to www.pg.com/careers and search for job number RND00001257. Be sure to attach your current resume and a cover letter no longer than two pages that tells us about your research and something about yourself not on your resume that is relevant to selecting you as a participant.

*Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, permanent resident, refugee or asylee, or temporary resident under the legalization program of the 1986 Immigration Act.

The Future of Innovation
No matter where your career starts, you will operate in a fast-paced, competitive environment. Technical, analytical, and managerial skills are essential parts of your successful career development.

Careers in research - whether in academics, industry, or government-offer endless scientific challenges. In industrial research, there is the added challenge of being able to produce superior and innovative products that are safe for humans and the environment. Therefore, new technologies that will effectively compete in a global marketplace are being aggressively pursued. Scientists/Engineers of diverse cultural backgrounds working for Procter & Gamble are uniquely positioned to manage scientific developments that will challenge the imagination. A goal of the Research and Technical Careers in Industry Conference is to inform you about how your innovative skills can fit into industrial research and development. You will also be exposed to technical careers that go beyond traditional laboratory research. Our conference will allow you to tap the experience of a broad range of scientific professionals who know where industrial research is today and where it will be in the future.

Our Commitment
We understand that the key to improving any organization is developing strong people. We are committed to exposing historically underrepresented scientists/engineers to technical careers in industry.

At Procter & Gamble, you will find men and women from all parts of the world and from different nationality, educational, and cultural backgrounds. You will find one of the largest African-American technical communities in industry today. We also have a rapidly growing Hispanic technical community. This success is due to the strong, long-term commitment of Procter & Gamble, both the company and its individual employees.

As technical leaders with one of the largest companies in the world, minorities are making significant advancements in science and technology that will shape the future. Our highly productive role as scientific professionals helps keep P&G at the forefront of global competition every day.

That's why we would like you to meet:

  • Dr. Ethel Cormier, Co-founder of the RTCI program and leads the Black Technical Ph.D. group at Procter & Gamble;
  • Dr. Kemal Catalan, who leads the Surface Coating Technology Platform for Baby Care Upstream R&D and the Surface Modification Special Interest Team for the Company. Cincinnati

Greater Cincinnati has a unique quality - it combines the amenities of life in the big city with the "feel" of living in a small town. It is the home of seven Fortune 500 companies and it offers something for every lifestyle. Within a 25-mile radius, you'll find acres of picturesque parks, excellent recreational facilities, a major theme park, collegiate and professional sports teams, art galleries, gourmet restaurants, opera, ballet, a renowned symphony, and numerous cultural attractions. The Black Family Reunion, The P&G Ohio Classic, Association of Tennis Professionals Championship, Labor Day and 4th of July fireworks, extravaganza on the riverfront, Seniors Professional Golf Tour, Tall Stacks, Oktoberfest, Taste of Cincinnati are just a few of the events that attract thousands to come out and celebrate.

One thing all of our communities have in common is friendly neighbors, who enjoy doing things with one another. The Walnut Hills Tennis Club, Mercy HealthPlex, and the Corbeau Ski Club, for example, have year-round calendars of trips and sporting activities. The Pan American Society of Greater Cincinnati sponsors dances and picnics and provides Spanish language and culture classes for children. The Society, founded in 1953, is a focal point to help Latinos contribute to the community while preserving their diverse heritage and culture.

"The most valuable experience was the networking process. I got a real feeling for what research in industry is and how people work, communicate, appreciate, and accomplish."

"The conference was absolutely fantastic. This was my first exposure to the corporate/industrial world, and the information and experience I gained these past few days have been absolutely invaluable."

"The mock interview was the best non-biased training I've ever received. It was not just about applying it to P&G, it was an overall great instrument for the future"
