US Career Advice | Functions | Legal Division

New attorneys in our Legal Division start with the title of Counsel and are generally hired after a summer internship or through the interview process and typically start immediately after they complete law school or a judicial clerkship. From time to time, lateral candidates, with less than three years experience, are hired. Attorneys who excel are considered for a promotion to Senior Counsel in five to eight years. Individuals with outstanding legal and managerial skills may qualify for promotion to Associate General Counsel. An Associate General Counsel is usually the chief lawyer for a business unit or for an important legal specialty.

The Legal Division is headed by the Chief Legal Officer, who reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer. The Chief Legal Officer is a member of our Global Leadership Counsel, the group responsible for the overall management of P&G’s business.

The key skill sets of the successful P&G attorney include initiative, creative problem-solving, leadership, and sound judgment. Every attorney receives a comprehensive, written performance assessment on a regular basis. Informal coaching occurs throughout the year.

In addition to standard Continuing Legal Education training opportunities, P&G attorneys also have unique opportunities for business training. High-performing P&G lawyers may be given the chance to receive some of the hands-on training that P&G’s business units provide to their own personnel by virtue of a 1-2 year brand assignment which allows the lawyer to “become the client.”

Due to the multinational nature of P&G’s businesses (we have operations on the ground in almost 80 countries); many attorneys also have the opportunity for international assignments during the course of their careers.
