US Career Advice | Functions | Intellectual Property

At P&G, Intellectual Property is so important, it commands its own division. The foundation of our overall business strategy is superior technology, so protecting our internal investment in intellectual property is critical. Without this, we simply can’t succeed. That’s why P&G attorneys are part of project teams from start to finish.

You’ll receive immediate responsibility. We give our lawyers exposure to our company’s important projects and issues. By design, this is accomplished in a variety of business and legal settings to provide a broad understanding of P&G’s operations.

We take a “learn by doing” approach to training. We also provide a core training program in patent and trademark law. Additionally, you will be provided coaching/mentoring from experienced colleagues when needed.

No One Has to Wait for an Exciting Challenge at P&G

Unlike many other legal environments, P&G’s Intellectual Property Division gives new lawyers immediate access to resolving clients’ day-to-day questions and problems.

Soon after joining our staff, you would have the opportunity to handle the full range of real world intellectual property legal issues. In no time you would be hearing client concerns first hand, probing for legally relevant facts, formulating legal advice and taking specific action when it is required.

All of our Intellectual Property attorneys have excellent law school records from a cross-section of leading law schools from across the country. For those attorneys who work in the area of patent preparation and prosecution, it is required that our attorneys have a technical undergraduate background (i.e. science and engineering), in order to practice patent law. In addition, our patent attorneys are required to take and pass the Ohio and U.S. Patent Registration exams within the first year of employment. We place special emphasis on written and oral communication skills. We also look for well-rounded men and women with an abundance of qualities such as leadership, vision and energy.

Summer Program
We are very proud of our summer program. Our interns are assigned both a supervisor and mentor to help them on-board quickly and have an opportunity to see corporate life and quickly gain hands-on experience. Each intern is given a variety of assignments to allow them the opportunity to understand the scope of the work we do.

Consider This

If this sounds challenging - - it is! But you should also know that work/life balance is an important company priority. You won’t be expected to work 80+ hours a week or travel long commutes.

Put Your Skills to Work
Patent and other intellectual property work, by its very nature, calls for an approach to the practice of law that is different from the culture at most law firms or corporate settings. You’ll counsel clients on patents, trade secrets, antitrust matters, and deal with freedom-to-practice and patent validity issues.
