Born Learning
P&G and United Way: Enabling a Good Start in Life

There is widespread consensus about the importance of Early Childhood Development and its significant, positive impact on the long-term wellbeing of children. P&G and United Way have partnered to champion this cause in Latin America. “Born Learning” is the program that provides quality education and stimulates development for children up to 6 years old, while also enabling their mothers to work and provide the family a source of much-needed income.
The program comes to life across Latin America, adapted to local needs and circumstances. For example, in Mexico over 150 child care centers have been improved, providing science kits and education for children. In Peru, the learn and play centers (“Ludotecas”) that are built in low-income areas across the country provide a much-needed space for recreation, education and care of young children. In Chile, child care centers have been recognized for their top quality and have become a hub of community development activities, also serving parents and the community at large, that acquire new skills that enhance their personal lives and enables new sources of income.
P&G employee volunteers are engaged in different ways, contributing their skills in maintaining or improving infrastructure, playing and devoting time to children, and sharing their skills with adults in the community.
The program has received ample recognition, including and most notably the “Best Practices in Social Responsibility 2011” awarded by Cemefi, AliaRSE and Forum Empresa in Mexico.
