For more than 30 years, SK-II has touched the lives of millions of women around the world by helping them to “Live Clear” through the miracle of crystal clear skin and life.
The fascinating story behind SK-II began at a sake brewery in Japan, where scientists noticed the elderly workers had wrinkled faces, but extraordinarily soft and youthful-looking hands. These hands were in constant contact with the sake fermentation process. It took years of research for scientists to isolate the miracle ingredient PiteraTM, a naturally-derived liquid from the yeast fermentation process.
Since then, SK-II with PiteraTM has become a special secret shared by celebrities such as Cate Blanchett and women around the world, transforming skin along the five dimensions of texture, radiance, firmness, spot control and wrinkle resilience critical to crystal clarity. A leading skincare brand in 13 markets, it continues to deliver the transformative power of crystal clear skin and life through well-loved products including Facial Treatment Essence.
Inventing a Category
When the first bottle of Facial Treatment Essence was introduced in Japan on December 21, 1980, it created a whole-new skincare category that lives on today.
The launch of the SK-II Signs Treatment family sought to change women’s attitude to aging with a new philosophy: “Beautifying Aging.” SK-II later went on to introduce one of the most breakthrough insights of “Skin Power,” once again changing the anti-aging landscape.
SK-II was one of the first brands in the world to launch facial masks. It was also the first to combine two key mask innovations: a two-piece concept to address different needs of different parts of the face, and a stretchable mask material to give a lifting effect.
Year after year since 2002, SK-II has continued to raise the bar in whitening, leading in the development of dedicated spot and tone care solutions. On its 30th anniversary, the brand has once again redefined standards with its Cellumination line—a holistic approach to go beyond white to aura-bright.
In 2011, SK-II introduced its male skincare and color cosmetics boutiques, creating talk-of-the-town buzz in markets like Japan and Korea and winning over beauty editors and industry experts.
