Solid Waste

P&G provides products and services that improve the lives of the world’s consumers, now and for generations to come.

During production, use, and after use of P&G products, solid waste may be generated. This represents both a waste of resources and a potential source of environmental impacts. P&G is committed to reducing the amount of solid waste arising from meeting consumers needs.

We are focusing our efforts in three main areas:

Reducing solid waste arising from our own operations. This includes:

  • Working to eliminate or reduce solid waste from production processes
  • Identifying ways to repurpose waste as useful raw materials (“Waste-to-Worth”)
  • Designing more material-efficient delivery systems

Designing Waste Out of our products and packaging. This includes:

  • Improving product and packaging design to deliver “more from less” – more value from our products from less materials and waste (e.g. product compaction).
  • Using life cycle thinking to improve products and packaging
  • Using materials that are compatible with solid waste management systems and have the potential to enable “Waste-to-Worth” systems such as recycling, waste-to-energy, and composting

Collaborating to catalyze Sustainable Waste Management Systems which are environmentally efficient, socially acceptable and economically affordable. This includes:

  • Supporting Integrated Solid Waste Management as a means to optimize the design and performance of solid waste management systems
  • Supporting Shared Responsibility as an approach where government, municipalities, industry and citizens each have a responsibility for effective waste management.
  • Supporting policies such as variable rate pricing (“Pay as you throw”)

In September 2010, we announced a series of 10 year sustainability goals which included goals for reducing packaging, reducing manufacturing waste, and developing pilot projects in both developed and developing markets that will serve to decrease waste being sent to landfills and dumps.  We will report progress on these efforts via our annual sustainability report, which is available at www.pg.com/sr
