P&G Pakistan celebrates ‘Zero Manufacturing Waste to Landfill’ milestone

Karachi, Feb 20, 2017: P&G, the maker of world renowned products such as Pampers, Always, Safeguard, Ariel, Head & Shoulders and Pantene, recently celebrated a new milestone of achieving ‘ Zero Waste to Landfill ’ at its manufacturing facility at Hub, Balochistan.

This is the second P&G site in Pakistan to achieve this status making the P&G plant at Hub an elite ‘Hall of Fame’ site across the P&G globe. Pakistan is amongst the top 19 countries globally where 100% P&G manufacturing facilities have met the zero waste qualification and is the second country in the South Asia, Middle East and Africa region to achieve 100% P&G facilities with zero manufacturing waste going to landfill. Moreover, the P&G Plant at Port Qasim was the first P&G site in the South Asia, Middle East and Africa region to reach this milestone.

Commenting on this achievement, Mr. Hasham Jamili, Plant Manager, P&G Pakistan, said: “As we celebrate 25 years in Pakistan, this is yet another important milestone for P&G in the country and a significant step in our sustainability journey in Pakistan. This milestone speaks volumes of the strong progress P&G is making towards its global environmental sustainability goal to have 100% zero manufacturing waste to landfill sites across the world by 2020.”

He further added, “P&G plants in Pakistan are working extensively towards the company’s long-term environmental sustainability vision by promoting sustainability practices amongst employees as well as with suppliers and partners. Since 2010 P&G plants in Pakistan have delivered 38%, 59% and 25% reduction in energy, water and CO2 respectively.”

P&G recently announced additional investments in recycling and beneficial reuse that will eliminate all manufacturing waste from its global network of more than 100 production sites by 2020. Since P&G began qualifying its sites as zero manufacturing waste to landfill, 56% of its global production sites have achieved this milestone. Plans are now in place to bring the remaining sites to the zero manufacturing waste to landfill status over the next four years. This means eliminating or beneficially re-using about 650,000 metric tons of waste, equivalent to the weight of nearly 350,000 mid-sized cars that would typically go to landfills.

P&G will achieve its zero waste goals on a worldwide basis by ensuring that all incoming materials are converted into finished product, recycled internally or externally or re-used in alternative ways through partnerships.
