At P&G, we believe in the philosophy of quality assurance, ensuring that products of superior quality delight the world's consumers and effectively provide our businesses and operations with continually improved quality systems and culture.
In accordance with our aim of providing consumers with premium quality products, our manufacturing plants strive to achieve high-quality manufacturing standards. We are also committed to providing responsible care to all our employees, our community and the environment.
We measure our quality assurance capability by gauging our systems and processes on a scale of 19 key elements, starting with leadership, training programs and a supply chain, to handling consumer complaints. These key elements are the foundation of our quality system and ensure that the products we send to our consumers are defect-free, safe, pure and effective.
P&G strongly believes in safeguarding the health and safety of its employees and workers. Four values provide the foundation for our safety program:
- Nothing we do is worth getting hurt for
- Health, safety and the environment can be managed
- Every defect could and should have been prevented (e.g., injury, equipment, time)
- Health, safety and the environment are everyone's responsibility
These values drive our Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) key element including leadership, commitment, behavior observation and feedback, all of which control performance management. By routinely assessing the efficacy of these key elements, we effectively achieve HS&E results and ultimately minimize incidents.
Employee safety at the workplace is a priority for us at P&G. To date P&G plants have amassed more than 6.4 million safe hours to date.
Superior products, health of employees, safety in the workplace and caring for the environment we work and live in are imperative to the long-term success of P&G. In accordance with these safety and quality assurance benchmarks, P&G plants across the globe operate on established global standards.
Sustainability Efforts by P&G Plants
P&G Plant at Port Qasim
In line with global P&G standards the P&G plant at Port Qasim has focused on environmental sustainability from day one, keeping sustainability in the forefront each step of the way including design, construction as well as operation of the plant.
The state-of-the-art plant at Port Qasim is P&G’s greenfield investment project, based on cutting edge technology, comparable to the best P&G plants across the world. It is contributing to the company’s long term sustainability vision on reducing consumer and manufacturing waste which go to landfills and designing products while maximizing conservation of resources through:
- - Integrated design, equipments & e-systems minimizing impact on environment and less energy usage
- - Zero effluent plant completely recycling waste water for industrial use
Environmental sustainability has been built into the design, construction and operation of the P&G plant at Port Qasim as follows:
Design phase:
- Use of natural light via sky lights in warehouse and ribbon windows in plant administration and operation offices saves on electricity
- Recycling of all waste water back into the process
- Sustainable landscaping of the plant garden using cacti and indigenous plants which require less water versus traditional landscaping resulting in water saving
Construction phase:
- Steel saved through careful load analysis
- Use of pavers instead of asphalt road which is recyclable and has less heat island impact
- All filling done with soil from within the site and hence no soil brought from outside
Operation phase:
- Use of energy efficient lighting and occupancy sensors ensure minimum electricity is utilized.
- Lights are switched off during day time in the offices and warehouses due to the use of skylights and ribbon windows letting sunlight in.
- “Port Qasim the Digital Frontier” a focused project harnessing the latest e-tools to make the site paperless while also delivering work simplification.
- Environmental footprint awareness building activity and a “go green week” celebration including quizzes, tree plantation and information centered on the concept of sustainability.
P&G Plant at Hub
Illustrating its commitment towards the environment the plant waste water treatment runoff program has achieved revitalization and runoff prevention. Within less than a year since the waste water treatment plant started operations, a drastic reduction in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) leaving the site was observed. National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) limits are met for all water leaving the site and this enables the plant to eliminate the risk of polluting the environment, by providing treated and in-spec waste-water. In January 2009-2010, the plant executed a bold step by converting 5 thousand square feet of barren land into green lawn, using treated wastewater. This has brought a drastic reduction in water drainage to the environment and ~ 40% of treated water is now used for watering this lawn. This not only reduces fresh water usage but further reduces outflow volumes, too.
Additionally, over the past four years plant has reduced its environmental footprints (electricity, natural gas, and diesel consumption) by 32% which means that producing one unit of product at Hub plant now impacts the environment 32% less than was required four years ago.
