Camay was first introduced in 1926 as a white soap that was mild and gentle, made just for women. In this era, women preferred white soaps because many imported soaps had colors added to mask impurities. For many years, Camay was advertised as "the soap of beautiful women." The name Camay was derived from the bar's own cameo stamp. "Camay" was coined from the French word camee, which means cameo, the jewel.
