Early in the 20th century, the Company began with one man's
idea for a new product and his perseverance and dedication
to make his dream a reality.
Dr. Bunting was a dedicated Baltimore pharmacist.
In 1914 he developed, in the prescription room of a drug
store, a combination of medication and "vanishing cream"
as a treatment for sunburn and appropriately called it
"Dr. Bunting's Sunburn Remedy."
One day, a customer who tried the new concoction on his
eczema stated to Dr. Bunting with great satisfaction:
"Your cream knocked my eczema!" This opened up broad new possibilities for the product, and also inspired the name Noxzema®.
Dr. Bunting continued to explore other opportunities as the
basis of his new business. For three years, he mixed,
heated and poured Noxzema from a large coffee pot into
blue jars. Demand grew for his "multi-purpose cream" and
in 1920 the first Noxzema Chemical Company factory was
opened in a tiny house in Baltimore. By 1938, the company's
goal of national distribution was achieved through
advertising on National Radio Networks, the Noxzema blimp,
and billboards on the boardwalk of Atlantic City.
By the 1950s an emphasis on strengthening our consumer
franchise grew and innovative products were established
such as shave cream, suntan lotion and cold cream.
CoverGirl Cosmetics was launched in 1960, backed with an
advertising campaign using actual magazine cover girls who
were enthusiastic about this "glamorous new makeup." Since
its introduction, the CoverGirl line has been regularly
expanded and the products updated in order to keep pace
with ever-changing fashion trends.
By 1966, Noxzema Chemical Company adopted the name Noxell.
In 1989, the Noxell Corporation was acquired by Procter & Gamble.
